Step into a world where whimsy and wilderness meet — Matthew Hassing’s solo exhibition presents a fresh, joyous survey of paintings that move between intimate landscapes and energetic patterned panels. This exhibition highlights Hassing’s distinctive voice: a painterly balance of calm observation and playful invention.
His landscapes capture single, treasured moments — late light, wind-still reeds, a quiet stand of trees — rendered with remarkable clarity. Luminous acrylic underpaintings anchor the compositions while oil accents create crisp strokes that define leaves and reed tips. Linear patterning recedes into the background to establish depth without breaking the hush, so small tactile details and layered geometry together produce a precise, meditative presence. Counterpointing these hushed scenes are exuberant patterned panels—dancing fish, looping vines, bold flowers, spirited zebras and even an elongate giraffe—where repetition, vivid color, and confident line generate rhythmic surfaces that both command attention and invite repeated viewing, each whimsical motif carefully composed to serve the whole.
